Author Randy Kearse spoke to students in Mr. Gonzalez’s Law classes and a large group of students in the auditorium. His inspirational story and cautionary tale had students captivated. While in prison Mr. Kearse decided to change his life and his future. His book “Changin’ Your Game Plan” tells his story and gives advice to other who have gone down the wrong path.
Students had an opportunity to speak with Mr. Kearse after the event and again on Friday when he came to meet students in the cafeteria during the lunch periods. Hibakusha Stories Team with Ms. Chrismore.
On Monday, December 5th, during 7th and 8th periods, Hibakusha Yamashita san and Sakaguchi san spoke to Jane Addams students.
Hibakusha (hee-ba-coo-sha) are Japanese people who survived the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Many Hibakusha have dedicated their lives to peace and nuclear disarmament. Their testimonies remind us of the tragic realities of nuclear weapons. Jane Addams High School is honored to be 1 of 15 schools in New York City lucky enough to take part in the Hibakusha Stories project.
Our guests included Mr. Yasuaki Yamashita, who was only 6 years old when the Atomic bomb fell on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. He feels it is important to keep alive the memory of the suffering, devastation, and death that nuclear weapons can cause in the hope that no one will ever use them again. You can read more about his story of survival at http://www.hibakushastories.org/yasuaki-yamashita.html
Ms. Hiroko Sakaguchi a second generation Hibakusha from Nagasaki who was born on July 22, 1949. Ms Sakaguchi’s mother was exposed to the atomic bomb at age 23 in Nagasaki, 3.5 kilometers from the hypocenter. To read more about Ms. Sakaguchi, read her biography on the Hibakusha Stories website. http://www.hibakushastories.org/hiroko-sakaguchi.html
Students made 1,000 origami cranes to send to Hiroshima with our wish for peace and hope that nuclear bombs will never be used again. To learn about the signifigance of 1,000 paper cranes, read about Sadako Sasaki and the Children’s Peace Statue on the Hibakusha Stories website. http://www.hibakushastories.org/paper_cranes.html
Thanks to all the teachers, students, and staff who made this a memorable and successful event.

Keep clipping those UPC symbols from Campbell’s Labels for Education!
So far we have been able to redeem points for a microscope with enlarging screen for the science department and rubber chickens for the physical education department.

Students volunteered for community service during Open School Night on October 27th. They did a fantastic job representing the Library and Garden Club. Students sold Smencils and juice boxes to raise money for the Garden Club. They sold hand sanitizers, pencils, food and other items at the library table. We had a very successful parent teacher event.
Thanks, students!

I am pleased to announce that the Jane Addams Library has received a $5,000 grant from the H.W. Wilson Foundation. This money will be used to purchase online resources and some e-readers for the library. This money is extremely helpful as New York public schools receive only $6.25 per student per year for library books. As our student population has gone down, so has the library budget. Electronic resourses are essential for the modern student and we are very thankful for the generousity of the H.W. Wilson Foundation. Please stay tuned as I spend this money and new resources become available for use by students and classroom lessons.
For more information about the H.W. Wilson Foundation, visit their website at http://thwwf.org/.
